2019 From the Dean

This is an exciting and transitional time for Baylor University. With the implementation of Illuminate, Baylor’s academic strategic plan, the School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) is set to grow and expects to be a key player in three of Illuminate’s five academic initiatives — Data Sciences, Materials Science, and Health. Additionally, the remaining two initiatives — Human Flourishing, Leadership and Ethics, and Baylor in Latin America — are connected deeply in our current programs.

Last fall, we were excited to announce a gift of $3.5 million from Mark and Jennifer McCollum of Houston to create the McCollum Family Chair in Data Sciences within ECS. Through the creation of this endowed chair, Baylor now has the ability to attract a top faculty member who can lead our data sciences initiatives within the School as well as work collaboratively with faculty from biology, statistics and computer science.

We are proud to have a Humanitarian Engineering program as well as student groups such as Engineers with a Mission and the Baylor Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) organization, both of which are involved in mission trips in various countries, including Latin America. In this issue, you’ll read about our Baylor BUV trip to Uganda in May 2018.

Our global impact extends not only through mission trips, but also through study abroad programs like the one Brittany Robertson experienced in Madrid, Spain. From creating new energy systems and enhancing security of future systems to expanding data sciences and providing intercultural experiences, we are shaping our world for the better.

I hope you enjoy reading about our faculty research and the students who are transformed by their Baylor ECS education. I encourage you to follow us throughout the year on our website at baylor.edu/ecs and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to read more of our favorite stories and stay connected with the School.
